A Rain Garden is one of the simplest forms of Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD). It is used for treating stormwater prior to discharge to the main stormwater system and ultimately our waterways and bays. Rain Gardens simulate the natural environmental conditions, filtering and slowing down (attenuating) storm flows before they enter our creeks and rivers. Rain Gardens can look just like a nice garden.
Rain Gardens can range in size from one or two square metres (for a residential property) to 300 square metres or more for larger projects. Typically they are located as part of the landscaping design of a property or adjacent roadside streetscape. They are ideal for domestic developments as they easily meet a number of typical planning requirements. For commercial / industrial properties they can be incorporated into a car park with minimal or no loss of space whilst providing an aesthetically pleasing appearance.
